(100th post!!!) IBA: John Coffino Replaces Ben Smith as Head Coach of Albany Legends

The Albany Legends announced yesterday that Ben Smith has resigned as head coach. John Coffino will be replacing him.

According to Legends owner Steve Miller, Smith is stepping down to "devote more time to his family and teaching career at Niskayuna High School." Smith wasn't even at the last three games. Another bald white guy (who I now know was Nick Dean, the General Manager of the Legends) was calling the shots.

John Coffino has served as an assistant coach at Iona, Niagara, and Saint Peter's. He has also served as head coach of the Albuquerque Thunderbirds of the D-League from 2008-2010.

I thought that Ben Smith was a pretty good coach and he had a winning record as head coach of the Legends. John Coffino has a solid resume and I think he will do a fine job as head coach. Coffino will be the Legends' fourth head coach after Derrick Rowland, who coached the Legends' championship team in 2010, Ben Smith, and Nick Dean.

Here is the complete history of all the Albany Legends coaches:

Derrick Rowland (2010)________Record: 19-3_________.864 winning percentage

Ben Smith (2011-2012)________Record: 17-7__________.708 winning percentage

Nick Dean (2012)_____________Record: 3-0_________1.000 winning percentage

John Coffino (2012-present)______Record: 0-0_________.000 winning percentage

  1. The other coach was Nick Dean the current General Manager of the Legends. He is a Major in the United States Air Force. Nick went to school locally at Mekeel Christian Academy and had his High School Jersey Retired and played for Nyack College (Div II) where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
